Saudis Back Fossil Fuels… at the Climate Negotiations….

October 8, 2011

Last week Saudi Arabi put forward a position to one of the main technical bodies of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in preparation for the Durban round of climate talks later this year.

In a move that anyone familiar with negotiations will not be surprised by, there is a core of items within their submission aimed to assist with the promotion of fossil fuel related activities.

No-one expects fossil fuel use to really be significantly negatively impacted under current plans of climate negotations.

In fact, all projections point to signficant expansion of oil, coal, and gas.

Whereas some groups will scorn the Saudis and their OPEC allies for promoting a fossil fuel centric agenda, realists will be more amenable to any serious efforts under the climate negotiations to promote greater fuel efficiency and emissions capture technologies.
